Set of two West African bronze elephants – Benin / Dahomey
Product Details
Material: Bronze
Color: Gold
Condition: Good
A special set of two hand-cast West African elephant sculptures, presumably from Benin and crafted within the Dahomey/Fon tradition.
The sculptures are made of bronze or brass and hollow-cast using the traditional lost-wax technique (cire perdue). Both elephants are richly decorated with fine geometric and circular patterns. A beautifully modeled bird sits on the back of each elephant.
The combination of elephant and bird gives the sculptures a distinctive character. Moreover, within the art of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, the elephant played an important role as a symbol of strength, prestige, and royal power.
The sculptures have a beautifully weathered surface and warm patina, allowing the details of the casting to stand out beautifully. Likely 20th-century.
A decorative and collectible set that fits perfectly into an interior featuring African art, tribal art, or unique vintage objects. Origin: West Africa, presumably Benin / Dahomey (Fon)
